Russ Sauer's Tuned B3-2's

The TWINS
| I wanted to purchase a couple loaner air rifles for
the youth in our club or anyone else that needed to borrow an air rifle
for shooting Mini-Field Target competitions. I needed something durable,
stout, and fairly accurate. I saw that Russ Sauer was tuning and selling
B3-2's and painting them with bed liner paint. The cost was very
reasonable, so I gave him a holler.
He sent me two beautiful twins. One had a butt pad spacer, so I took it off. For youth, I don't need any extra length there. I got some scopes that were donated to the club, so I purchased some Accushot mounts and put the scopes on. They are beauties. A Blonde & a Brunette (black scoped/silver scoped). First things first. Had to sight in the scopes. It took a bit with the cheaper scopes. One of those deals that when you change the elevation, the windage moves a bit. Once I had them just right at 13 yards, they were holding nickel size groups with the Brunette, and slightly larger under a quarter with the Blonde. The Brunette held a tad tighter. I was shooting in sitting field target position with no straps. I shot several pellets types and ended up shooting what I've found to work best in all the other B3-2's I've tried, Gamo Match wad cutters. Meisters should shoot a bit better, but I was out of them. After sighting in, I got the chrony out and ran blonde through first. Now, blonde was still dieseling and smoking a bit. First shot was 707, and then it climbed. Velocities climbed to 790fps going up and down in that range with a good puff of smoke out the barrel after every shot. So I grabbed the brunette and first shot was 720, then 715, 715, 718, 720, etc..It never had more than a 5fps spread. Very sweet! No wonder it held tighter groups. No dieseling on this one. I expect that when the blonde stops dieseling, I should get similar results. Now to check out the overall look and feel of the twins. Both cocked smooth with a good crisp lockup. I didn't feel any spring noise or grinding when cocking. They were pretty equal in that area. The trigger pull had plenty of creep, as usual with these guns, but broke nice and not too heavy. Much better than stock. The bed liner paint was put on better than any I had ever painted with the same. A very nice finish on both with smaller lighter texture. Good job Russ! Russ left the open sights on these, but you can get them with the barrels cut, cocking arms shortened, etc. Since these are loaners, they will work out great just as they are. On another note, it looks like he did some work on the breach. Both looked flat on the end with some chamfering and the pellets fit snug, but were easy to load (not too tight). Perfect for youth. It kinda reminded me of the loading breach on my HW97, the way that looked and loaded. There also was no twang at all, just a good solid thunk, smooth firing cycle with just a tad of spring twist now and then. Not enough to cause any major problems with POI shifts, and light enough to keep the pellets under nickel size groups. For mini field target, even if the groups spread at 35-40 yards to quarter size or even half dollar size, it will take a target down each time. So this is exactly what I've been looking for. If your interested in getting a nice fully tuned B3-2 with lot's of options, you can contact Russ at guru1(at)charter.net On another note: I'd like to thank those that donated scopes to the youth in our club. They are very much appreciated. A couple have already gone out, and two more on these nice little B3-2's. Thanks guys! Reviewed by Robert Fischer |
